Balinalar/ Whales

I still use the fabrics at home. I am not buying any new fabrics. Designing in relation to the available fabrics made me stretch my thinking. I am certainly going to melt the material at home.
This bag turned out very soft :) The print did not cover the whole surface of the outer fabric.(Acrylic paint stiffens when it dries) Silk is already soft. The cotton lining is also very soft. So this is the result of this experiment :)

Bir hayalperestin maceraları/ The adventures of a dreamer

2015'in ilk iki ayı 2014'ün işlerini bitirmekle geçti.

-----------
The first two months of 2015 had passed by finishing the works of 2014. It was only late February that i have started to think. My conciously and willingly gained responsibilities on one side, the things that i want to do just because i feel like on the other side... I have always been a hard worker. I never complain about that. I also dream a lot. But my dreams are always postponed, to a later but never happening moment, waiting for a big spare time that i will only reserve for myself. This year i wanted to achieve at least a little part of those dreams by dividing them into smaller bits. Playing with paints and fabric more (regularly if possible), taking a course on art were two of my dreams.

For the first one i needed to put some rules and encouragement for myself. This is how 52 weeks of print making project had developed. I also tried to regulate my paper exercises, i even started following weekly prompts but i just skipped them after the very first week. At the moment paper exercises sometimes provide a base for the fabric project and sometimes they evolve on their own. I also have another paper project for this year but still could not start.

Though i really wanted to take an art course i knew it was impossible at this moment. I neither had the time to frequently go to a course venue nor could i find one on the topics i was interested in (mixed media painting, printing on fabric) So i started searching for the next best thing: An online course that i could follow. I was looking for a course that would focus on techniques rather than forcing me to produce/ copy a certain product.

While i was progressing in tiny steps on my own, so weird and awesome things happened in March. In the middle of the month a close friend of mine invited me to hold my  first art workshop in the university.

"Temel Amaç: Oyun Oynamak/ Main Purpose Is: To Play"

------------------
A few days after the workshop invitation, i got news from the artist Julie Balzer's blog. I won one of Julie's new stencil designs. Thousands of people follow that blog.

We held the art workshop on March 25 and i got other news on the same day. I won a seat in the artist Alisa Burke's new online course. There are thousands of people following this blog, too, and 452 people who joined the giveaway.I would never join these giveaways if they were not art related. But anyways i have not won a single thing in my life until that week.

--------------
Gonca Hanım mentioned me about the "Peace Honeycombs" project in Çanakkale, Turkey and encouraged me to join. It is an international, open air art exhibition on universal peace, which will be located in main town square and will be permanent. (Çanakkale is the city home to Dardanelles Strait and Gallipoli Wars of 1915- 1916. A lot of people died during the wars and the biggest loss was among Ottoman and Anzac soldiers.) I was hesitant to apply. What would i write in my cv? Thus, i declined from applying, saying the due date was near. But Gonca Hanım said the application period was extended. I waited until the very last day and applied. I have sent two files, one contains my short professional cv, the other my "art" trials. I received the approval message on March 31. The exhibition will be revealed on April 25, Anzac Day. I will finish my work this week.

-----------------------
When i went to the university for the workshop, i brought my sketch book, examples of prints on fabric and the bag i had sewn for my friend along with me. Due to a couple of coincidences, i received a proposal to sell my crazy hand sewn bags in a brick and mortar shop in Izmir. And we decided to give it a try. The name of our architectural office is "Yerdeniz (Earthsea)" and we already operate on different design scales. This is why we named the bags "Yerdeniz (Earthsea)". So, a new adventure had started for "Yerdeniz Tasarım (Earthsea Design)".

------------------------xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-------------------------

--------------
And the trials to produce fabric tags in this direction. I could not find a way to print fabric tags. There are places which print them but first i wanted to see what i can do with the material i already have. The topmost two are ribbons with permanent pens, markers, endorsing ink stamps. 3. row is polyester band with permanent pen and  endorsing ink stamps. 4. row is polyester band with acrylic stamp. 5. row is acrylic stamped and cut tags.  I washed the first three pieces to see how the inks smeared. I had high hopes for permanent pens but they all smeared.

Ve Yerdeniz'in ilk çantası (kalemlik) :) Geçen haftaki kumaşa baskı parçaları ile pazen karışımı. Hermes Çanta ön yüzü. Boyutlar 10 x 20 cm.

Peki Yerdeniz'in ilk çantasında neden Hermes belirmiştir?

------------------------
And the first bag (pencilcase) of Yerdeniz :) Printed fabric pieces of last week mixed with flannel. Hermes pencil case front face. Dimensions are 10 x 20 cm.

In Greek mythology (let's say old and legendary beliefs) many deities live in the universe. There are gods and goddesses for any phenomenon you can think of. Greek gods have faults just like humans. They make mistakes, suffer in pain, fall into ridiculous circumstances, be happy. Perhaps, their only difference from humans is that they are immortal. From this perspective these deities feel more "humane" and approachable to me. In such a universe, Hermes is the god of commerce, thieves, travelers, athletes and the patron of all known boundaries/ border crossings/ transitions. Moreover, he is the messenger of Gods and he also rules the passage to the underworld (land of death). As he acts like a postman he has to move fast. That is why he has winged sandals and a winged helmet. At the intersection of important roads, Hermes statues are placed. The travellers touch these statues to wish for a smooth travel and then hit the road.

Why does Hermes appear on the first bag of Yerdeniz? It is a complete coincidence, or maybe it is a good wish message for the adventure :)

Davet

Dörtnala gelip Uzak Asya'dan
Akdenize bir kısrak başı gibi uzanan
Bu memleket bizim!
Bilekler kan içinde, dişler kenetli
ayaklar çıplak
Ve ipek bir halıya benzeyen toprak
Bu cehennem, bu cennet bizim!
Kapansın el kapıları bir daha açılmasın
yok edin insanın insana kulluğunu
Bu davet bizim!
Yaşamak bir ağaç gibi tek ve hür
Ve bir orman gibi kardeşçesine
Bu hasret bizim!

Plea

This country shaped like the head of a mare
Coming full gallop from far off Asia
To stretch into the Mediterranean
THIS COUNTRY IS OURS.
Bloody wrists, clenched teeth
bare feet,
Land like a precious silk carpet
THIS HELL, THIS PARADISE IS OURS.
Let the doors be shut that belong to others
Let them never open again
Do away with the enslaving of man by man
THIS PLEA IS OURS.
To live! Like a tree alone and free
Like a forest in brotherhood
THIS YEARNING IS OURS.

52 haftada baskı yapmak 6. Hafta / 52 weeks of printmaking Week 6

---------
This week i tried 2 things. The first one is fabric dying with natural methods. I went to the farmers' market last week and bought red oninons and red lettuce just for this purpose. I was supposed to get a blueish/purplish color.
These are the skins of 3 onions in this pot.

-------------
I have put 2 lettuce leaves on top of the onion skins. Then the cotton fabric (again an old pillow case) and on top 2 lettuce leaves again. I added a little vinegar and boiled everything.

Kaynarken tenceredeki su mor olmasına rağmen kumaşım korkunç bir renk aldı. Soluk mavi/ yeşil/ gri arası bir renk çıktı. Sanki yanlışlıkla boyanmış gibi.
-----------
Although the water turned purple as it was boiling my fabric got on a horrible color. It became a faded blue/ green/ grey hue. As if it was dyed by accident.

Geçen seneki bir dikiş projesinden artan kırmızı pamuklu kumaş parçalarını boyadım. Kendi yaptığım şablonları kullandım. Bu kumaşlar çok küçük, enleri 12 cm.
-----------
I painted red pieces of fabric left from a sewing project of last year. I used my homemade stencils. These fabric pieces are very small, they have a width of 12cm.

Bu da en büyük parça. Henüz işi bitmedi. Sadece fonu boyamış oldum.

This is the biggest piece. Not done yet. I have only painted the background.

"Balık bilir" çanta ve ilk sanat atölyesi/ "Fish knows" bag and the first art workshop

---------
A new era has started for me today :)
I am a professional architect. But i have been giving lectures on architecture and architectural conservation in the past 8 years. I have also held workshops. Somehow, as my education had kept on going, i could not tear myself apart from the academy. My scholar friends had always supported me. Thus, i could lead a semi-academic life while working in my office. But last year, due to the ongoing field work of my PhD my university adventure had come to a halt. I only had the energy enough for the office and my thesis. And of course my lunatic artistic works that i did for keeping myself "sane".  A very dear and old friend of mine, a scholar as well, who follows my blog invited me to her course last week. She asked me "to come and show how i do this in practice". As i did not exactly understand what i should be telling i asked "shall i tell how to play with the paints?" Yes, this was what she wanted.
My "art" life can be summarized as the sketches i have been doing since high school, my sculpture course of 5 months that i took 6 years ago and which i still dream of continuing, my regularly painted pages in the last 3-4 years, fabrics and my sewing adventure. What was i supposed to tell? Did my totally improvised, trial-error / experimental works have something in common? Was it possible to tell these to someone else? Were they repeatable? I tried to consider my works as an outsider. I tried to analyze and define the separate elements that made these a whole. (I will talk about these elements some other time) And i held my first art workshop today. How was it...
I am not a specialist on any subject but when it was art i totally freaked out. I thought i would not be able to speak, they would be terribly bored, they would think my art work is totally nuts. Well, none of these happened. My almost half-age colleagues listened eagerly, we talked altogether, played together, everything was beautiful. Many new ideas emerged. And best of all, everybody had produced something authentic. I really was not aware of time. Even if they were bored, they were kind enough to hide it:) I am thankful for that :) I was so happy :)

---------------------------xxxxxxx------------------------

-----------
And the bag i sewed for this dear friend of mine. It is actually a pencil case. I took the fabric i printed on the first week of print making.

-----------------
My friend loves fishes and the turquoise color. So i knew i was going to add some kind of fish to this bag. I had already printed the scissors pattern in turquoise. But on the reddish/ pinkish background it did not look like that. I thought for a while. First, i decided to break up the order of the prints. I do not like symmetrical things. I usually try to find some balance among the disorder.
I pasted the homemade fabric tapes i have produced with leftover pieces of flannel. I wrote "fish knows" with the cookie stamps. And i sewed the fabric tapes on their middle line.

------------
At first i decided to put the fish aligned with the text. But then i declined. It seemed more appropriate (whatever this means :) to make it parallel to the scissors. I have cut the fish from a dark turquoise/ petrol blue background fabric which has a pattern. When i have put it on the fabric tapes it was lost among the patterns. So i tried to give it a frame. I painted the leftover purple fabric of last week in turquoise. And cut a circle.
It is so hard to sew a circle with a tiny radius. I could not do a paralel stitch regarding the edge. So i said, if i can not make it decent then let me do it messy. I went over the circle a couple of times. Really, are there any tips to sew circular things?

Hafta / 52 weeks of printmaking Week 5

5. haftaya geldik bile.
----------------
We arrived at the 5th week already. This week i tried a relatively easier print. I did not have too much time and i wanted to see what i could do using a basic form. I started with an old cotton cushion case again. I printed dark blue circles with the lid of a detergent bottle. I aligned with the edge of the fabric and then followed the order of the circles.

2. katman.Eski akrilik boya şişesinin kapağı ile. Turkuaz renkte. Yine kumaş kenarını hiza alıp daireleri takip ettim.
-----------------
2. layer. With the cap of an old acrylic paint bottle. In turquoise. I have aligned with the edge of the fabric again and then followed the circles.

3. katman. Eski krem tüpü kapağı ile. Açık mavi renkte.
-----------
3. layer. With an old cap of cream tube. In light blue.

----------------------
This time i have put a towel under my fabric. I used my  homemade stamp pad to take paint onto the caps. I have printed the topmost layer, smallest circles in light blue with a mixture of paint and fabric medium. I forgot to mix the medium in previous layers. These are the caps i have used.

--------------
It is possible to produce many other patterns with circles. I will test the durability of this fabric after ironing and washing. If it does not fade i will print a bigger piece. I plan to mix it with another fabric and sew a blouse.

52 haftada baskı yapmak 4. Hafta / 52 weeks of printmaking Week 4

-------------
This fabric was also cut from the hems of a white pair of linen pants, same as last week. I have painted it with the left over purple acrylic paint mixed with fabric medium. Not that i am very fond of this color but i decided to use the paints before their expiry dates.

---------------
As the fabric stood extremely purple before me, the first thing that crossed my mind was "i wish i had not painted this hue". Then i have set it aside. As i was drawing in my art journal i came across a page i had done before. And decided to rework this page on fabric horizontally.

------------
I did not deal with a new stamp this week. But i have used my former homemade stencils. I have mixed a dark blue-purple hue and painted in the oval pattern. The paint kind of overflowed the stencil. You should use a sponge instead of a brush but i do not have the patience. The right way is to take little paint on the sponge and go over twice. If you take a lot of paint on the brush at once, like i did, this is the result you will get.

Proje için çalışırken dinlediğim şarkıyı (diren kalbim-hold on my heart) yazmak geldi içimden.

Then i have mixed grass green and yellow to write "diren kalbim (hold on my heart)". I wanted to write the song i heard as i was working for the project. As everything, everybody had got more merciless recently, it was necessary to encourage myself.
The oil pastel text on paper worked out well and it was perfectly legible but here on fabric it disappeared. I was disappointed with my fabric again.

Moving on i decided to paint with white over it. The white had balanced all the purples. and the green peeking underneath seemed like shadows. I have cut pieces from the last saved bits of flannel and printed cotton leftovers. I pasted them with mod podge. I hope it will prevent fraying, too. Maybe i can sew them to secure them more, i haven't decided yet.

Bu da arka yüz.

parçalar/ pieces

Yine farklı zamanlarda biraraya gelen bir sayfa. Evde yaptığım şablonla akrilik sprey, damga denemeleri, kumaş bant parçaları.

Another page that came together over time. With homemade stencil and acrylic sprey, stamping trials, fabric tape pieces.

comfortably numb

One of my favourite legendary Pink Floyd songs, "comfortably numb". This page had been waiting for months. First added the black paint then the Medusa head. Then i have forgotten about it. Last week when i heard the song (yay for sleepless nights due to projects) i wrote it here. It starts as "Hello, is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me." The song is beautiful on its own but if you watch the "Wall" scene, then you will love it more.
