52 haftada baskı yapmak 7. Hafta / 52 weeks of printmaking Week 7

We don't live spring or fall very much here. As the winter rains continue you wake up one day and find summer outside. Though the weather itself is not a dependable phenomenon to show seasons' pass, there is a definite sign in Izmir that shows the arrival of spring: Kites. Most of the time, these dudes show up in February but on the first day of March they reach out to public squares, creep on the peaks inside the city and sometimes climb the mountains. Thus, the arrival of spring is officially announced. The days are longer, the sun does not go down when you come out of work, as the adults try to reach their homes so tired the kids circle them running around with kites in their hands.
One of my best childhood memories are the kites we used to do with my grandfather. He used to bring thin timber sticks home every spring. He would prepare a glue mixing water and flour. Sometimes with newsprint and sometimes with colorful paper to cover the strings, we would make big hexagonal kites. They would be bigger then us, and have very long and outstanding tails. And then my grandfather would hold me and my brother by the hand to lead us to the nearest green peak. With a bay view across, surrounded by many kids like us, we would fly the kites all day long. Kites had something to do with happiness and freedom.
As we grew older, we gave up on hexagonal kites and started doing the basic chapi-chapi kite. In time we forgot about them, too. Kites got out of my mind until i graduated from high school and went to university. On the spring of my first year in Ankara, i came across kites in the famous stadium of our school. Some were very basic like our chapi-chapi kites and some were engineering wonders. Making and flying kites were communal activities. They had something to do with happiness and freedom.
Years passed, i returned back to İzmir. I came across kites not only in spring but also at other times. I saw that they became the unspoken word, the missed solidarity. And just because of this reason i saw something as innocent as kites being taken down from the sky by ill- force and being burnt.
This week's print is dedicated to the messengers of spring and all things beautiful, kites. I hope you make a kite by your own hands and fly it while you can...

Özgürlük: Freedom

  5. I haven't thought about kites in years - shame isn't it? As kids we made our own kites too and flew them on the gentle breezes. Such a wonderful memory to have come back. Thank you for the lovely post and the beautiful reminder of childhood.
